- Bonn-based Group is installing 15,000 digital meters in Mülheim an der Ruhr

RWE Deutschland is relying on the infrastructure and services provided by Deutsche Telekom to communicate with 15,000 digital electricity meters in Mülheim an der Ruhr. To achieve this, the Bonn-based Group will install the smart meters and communication boxes necessary for remote queries by the middle of the year. They collect metering data from the meters and transfer the values after encryption securely to RWE. The "Mülheim zählt" project ("Mülheim counts") is to date the largest smart metering project in Germany. In total over 100,000 devices will be installed this year. This means that virtually the whole town will be equipped with smart meters. "From the experience gained and yet to be gained from the "Mülheim zählt" project, we will obtain important information about the advantages and proper handling of a new generation of energy data recording," says Gerhard Radtke who is involved in leading the project at RWE Deutschland. "Telekom uses its communications infrastructure and expertise in handling mass data to prepare itself now alongside such partners as RWE to the new challenges relating to smart metering," says Gabriele Riedmann de Trinidad, Head of the Group business area for Energy, Deutsche Telekom. The use of digital electricity meters is the first step towards intelligent energy management. As a result of earlier data availability in the electricity network, operators can continue to run their systems reliably under ever more challenging conditions and electricity customers can better adapt their usage behavior on the basis of their current electricity usage data. Deutsche Telekom aims for sustained growth through innovative internet solutions. Such new business areas as Energy, Healthcare and Connected Cars are expected to contribute a billion euros to total revenue by 2015.
