CarConnect Adapter

CarConnect Adapter

Deutsche Telekom is expanding its CarConnect offering. Effective immediately, customers who do not have mobile communications contracts with Deutsche Telekom can also use the service, turning their vehicles into connected cars. CarConnect gives customers more safety and in-car Internet: the current vehicle data is analyzed and any damage or theft is reported immediately over the app. It also turns cars into rolling hotspots – even abroad, thanks to EU roaming. With this expansion, Deutsche Telekom is cementing its position as the first provider of end-to-end solutions for in-car surfing and telematics services.

All data at a glance and improved safety on board

With a CarConnect adapter and free smartphone app, all cars built in 2006 and later can get connected. To do so, the adapter is plugged into the car's on-board diagnostic (OBD-II) connector. The app is available free of charge in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store. CarConnect analyzes vehicle data such as battery charge level and error codes and notifies the user in case of theft or impacts. In addition, the traveled route can be tracked on the app in real time.

Customers get access to the best LTE network through the SIM card in the CarConnect adapter, which also serves as a WiFi hotspot. The adapter connects up to five devices with the Internet concurrently.

Tracking, theft protection, and hotspot for vehicle fleets

The expansion of this offering to new customers will benefit operators of smaller vehicle fleets, such as businesses with company cars, car sharing providers, or taxi companies. CarConnect lets them keep track of up to 24 adapter-connected cars in the same app. Fleet managers can see their vehicles' current locations, speed, and status at any time. They can plan routes and workshop appointments better. If a vehicle is stolen or damaged, the app sends an alert automatically. What's more, fleet operators can offer their users free WiFi as an added incentive.
