Promoting young talent
A very special baskets@school session to start off the new 2017/2018 season: the Telekom Baskets Bonn players visited the rowing club (RVPG) at the Otto Kühne School. After a rowing session together on the Rhine, the participants went on to a basketball training session in the sports hall.
And Cuban-German Yorman Polas Bartolo gave it everything. An extra special challenge for him was getting used to the rough waters of the Rhine after a summer spent on the Caribbean Sea around Cuba.
The entire meeting was covered by a variety of Bonn media. TJ DiLeo speaks with broadcaster WDR from Bonn. To follow is an overview of the coverage: WDR Lokalzeit aus Bonn; Generalanzeiger Bonn.
On familiar territory, the Baskets team members took back the initiative and astonished the students with their fancy tricks. Here is where TJ DiLeo proved his mastery, and prepared his next slam-dunk.
Naturally enough, there was time at the end of the event for the obligatory autograph and photo sessions. The players catered patiently to every student's request.
The fifth season of Baskets@school 2018/19 kicked off with a special training session. Four professional players from Telekom Baskets Bonn were joined by Chris O’Shea, former assistant coach and head coach, in a session with young fencing talents at Tannenbusch Gymnasium in Bonn. While the basketball players took a crash course in saber fencing, the high schoolers practiced their lay-ups and jump shots. The day's motto: dunk vs. epee.
The Baskets players clearly had fun. "It gets pretty hot under the mask," said TJ DiLeo (#11). The most difficult thing, he says, is to "parry an attack and then switch to counterattack in an instant."
