Professor Dirk Helbing, ETH Zürich and TU Delft

Dirk Helbing is a professor of computational social science with the Department of Humanities, Social and Political Sciences and an affiliate of the Computer Science Department at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETH Zurich). He earned a PhD in physics and was managing director of the Institute of Transport and Economics at Technische Universität Dresden in Germany. Dirk Helbing gained international recognition for his work on pedestrian flows and crowd disasters, traffic flow, and computer models of social interactions. His current research discusses globally networked risks and the hidden laws of global epidemic spread. Dirk Helbing is an elected member of the Leopoldina German Academy of Sciences. He was also awarded an honorary PhD from Delft University of Technology, where he is now professor of the Engineering Social Technologies for a Responsible Digital Future PhD research program.
