Having the bravery to experiment and trying out different solutions sometimes ends in failure. For Péter, a Java Developer from Magyar Telekom, failure is not a reason to give up, instead it’s a great way to move forward and learn. He enjoys the autonomy and trust he is given as an expert, in a job he is so passionate about that for him it feels more like a hobby.
What is the best part of your job?
Péter: What I like most is that we cover a very wide spectrum. Practically, from assessing the needs, to designing or developing the product, to operation, we cover the whole workflow. I have a say in the whole process and I can exercise my creativity at every step, that's what motivates me the most. (Currently I’m involved in the development of a system that facilitates the digital management of HR-related needs for employees.) When we face a greenfield problem, we try to choose technologies that are state-of-the-art to solve it. I really love and enjoy my work, it's not just a job, it's a hobby and I love being involved in this field.
Let’s say I would like to set off on a similar career path like you. What steps should I take?
Péter: I feel lucky to have started my career at Telekom and with this team. I'm surrounded by highly professional colleagues, I can learn from them. I had a fantastic mentor, who, apart from teaching me a lot, encouraged me from the beginning to experiment, to try to solve problems on my own and to come up with possible solutions. I might fail at first, I might mess up, I might make mistakes, but I will learn from it. The best advice I can give is to dare to try new ideas and you should never stop learning.
How has the company supported you in your career growth?
Péter: On the one hand, the company has given me a lot of learning opportunities, on the other hand, the challenges I’ve been working on are very diverse. I learned a lot from each of these challenges. There was no obvious solution to any of them and the fact that I could think about what would be the best one helped me the most. It was the empowerment of my leader that made it all possible.
What are the tips&tricks to grow and stay ahead of the curve?
Péter: When faced with a greenfield problem, we try to choose technologies that are state-of-the-art today. We are always trying out the latest versions, listening to the industry, reading, talking to other developers within the company and in other fields, as well as to outsiders.
Why did you choose Telekom as an employer and why do you stay?
Péter: Before I came here, I was already aware of the company culture. I had friends who worked here, and I heard about it from them. I was also aware of the professional knowledge that had been accumulated over the years. It's a great asset, I think it's something to be valued and I try to take as much of it as I can. I felt that this is the place where I can best develop myself professionally.
And why am I staying? Because of the great community and because I feel that I have a lot to give to this company and I am confident that I will have many more opportunities and support from Telekom to develop my skills and career.
